My Scribbles

My true passion lies within the written word. I love nothing more than divulging my most inner thoughts and imagination and bringing them to life through the medium of literature.

My tastes vary from epic fantasy to post apocalyptic struggle to meandering social rants to soul revealing truths; I write in any form that takes my whim, from short story, to poetry, to essay, to film script. I live for my fantasies and long to transcend them into reality.

Fiction

Some envy my lifestyle, some not so much. Some say I have a gift, others would say it's a curse. One thing we can't argue on, is that I have been around. I've seen many things, heard many songs, tasted much exotic food; and some lovely ladies along the way.

The Paper Men
I would remember always the fire crackling away in the hearth. It was a constant of the old cottage and Nan had a gift for it. She would set it as the cock crowd and would not have to feed it until later that evening. Granda had a gift as well, a gift for storytelling.
Jack may be a broken soul and a mere shell of his former self, however, he is always good for an entertaining rant. Pull up a seat and a drink and share in Jack's wonderings.

The Losing Side
People who back the wrong side lose the war, and go on losing.

I don't recall where I got the quote from, however I conjured the following piece under its influence.
The short story focuses more on the consequences of making a series of bad choices, rather than focusing on the choices themselves. It's nothing too serious, just a piece I did for the pure enjoyment.

Where has all the Art Gone?
The Revolution introduced me to art, and in turn, art introduced me to revolution - Albert Einstein

From remake, to "based on a true story", to repetitive and uninspired imagery, to hallow lyrics and over produced melodies, to unscripted drama and melodramatic plots, it seems that originality, creativity and imagination have taken a back seat in the world of mainstream art.

As I pulled up to work this morning, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody blared through my speakers and I thought "What a song." The variety of melodies and instruments, invigorating and the thought-out, heartfelt and authentic lyrics, captivating...

Liver and Onions - A Day in the life of an Ordinary Irish Drone
In today's economic climate, with low paying, zero hour contract jobs, there is a phrase that is thrown at many of us who are considered to be the working class; "Be grateful you have a job."

Usually this is casually uttered by someone who has no idea what is to have a minimum or slightly above minimum wage job. Now I don't entirely blame these people or would be too quick to call them ignorant, misled, perhaps. After all, with the Central Statistic Office claiming that the average annual income in this country to be aprox €35,000, you can't exactly hold those who believe this to be true to be entirely accountable for being blasé towards those of us who are struggling

A Rebuttal - Your Job does not Define who you are
I know that there are many of you out there, who are in the same boat. Those who have to work a job that you hate; whether it's to support a family, yourself or your dreams, there's no denying the fact that you are "stuck" with this career. We don't all have the luxury or opportunity to drop it all and chase our dreams.

I came across an article recently in relation this topic which I found alarming and disturbing. The author claimed that by putting your very best into that job that you hate, fulfillment and happiness will follow. I would wholy disagree with this sentiment.

A Homage to South Park - Intelligent Comedy at its Best
When I was eleven I fell in love with a quiet mountain town called South Park.

At a first glance, South Park was seen as nothing more than a crudely drawn and crudely animated cartoon that used toilet humour and offensive language and subject matter to provoke shock laughs. This is somewhat of a half truth; Mat stone and Trey Parker are held in high esteem as writers today; their Broadway musicals, movies and TV shows have won awards and are critically acclaimed but they haven't wandered far from their roots. Behind the fart jokes and flamboyant characters, always lies a message. South Park would be a piece of intelligent creativity to truly shape who I would become.

The Subtlety of Ignorance
The problem with sexism is that these days it's far more subtle, so subtle in fact, that some people are totally unaware that they themselves are discriminative in nature. When we become complacent with sexism or any kind of ism, we are in danger of simply accepting this nonchalant mindset as a society...
When I was 17, when I suffered my first heartbreak. At the time, I thought the pain would never end. I couldn't be consoled and I spent a week and a half solid crying non stop. I cried until, in an act of desperation, I took to my pen and copybook and I flicked through my English school book until I found an exercise that spoke to me. I was sick of crying and wanted a distraction.

However, what I recieved was far more valuable than any distraction, I got liberation, relief and satisfaction. Half way through writing my tears had finally stopped and by the end I was smiling. The world was no longer ending, I was at peace.

Becoming somewhat frustrated with this country of mine, I penned this one for all of us who have become the forgotten generation.

The Enigma of Gratitude
Here I explore the possible overuse of gratitude and how it could perhaps be standing in the way of appreciating your wonderful self.

When I Grow up, I want to be...
This is a short ebook that I've put together where I discuss some practical measures to bring fulfillment and pleasure to  your life. It is based on the experiences of my own dreary life, that has brought me to the precipice on many occasions. I was once completely lost and utterly hopeless, however by doing some serious and honest exploring and research, my attitude and approach to life changed. By melding a few new habits into my daily 9-5 in retail, I have claimed a peaceful and worthwhile existence.

The Forgotten Generation
As my days pass to months and months pass to years, bitter resentment has been festering within. I can’t help but feel lost and forgotten by the world.

I can’t speak for my entire generation but from experience, this feeling is mutual among my peers; A generation of twenty and thirty somethings who feel hard-done-by and abandoned by the government. We are the future but what kind of future shall we live? I, like so much of my generation, hold a degree which I studied six hard years for. We are qualified, intelligent and competent; yet for large number of young people that didnt take the courageous step and emigrated, are mostly to be found either in severe debt, just scraping by or, as is my own case, still living with our parents.

Falling Stars
Sometimes it's hard to believe the hope

Blonde and Blonder
I recently had the misfortune to meet the most conceded, arrogant and frankly rotten pair of young ladies that I have ever come across. Though I found their behaviour infuriating, it did encourage the creative juices to flow.

A piece inspired by true love

Aoife's Goodbye
The proccess of emigration is heartbreaking. This is for the grandas, nannies, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters who have suffered the heartache of saying goodbye to a loved one.

Shadow Guardian
Shadow Guardians have haunted the depths of my imagination for years. They are a band of evil warriors who appear in other pieces of my writing

Manila Major
As the matches come thick and fast, here's a quick roundup for the next two days. It looks like Liquid will go through in the first lower bracket match Vs Navi, I think they’ll be too much for the Fan favourites. This would lead to Liquid Vs Fnatic in the next round and I think they’ll triumph here also leading them to the LB Final.
